SIMBAD : a Institut TELECOM project
Project leader : TELECOM & Management SudParis
Issue and objectives
The SIMBAD project was launched in January 2004. It is one of Institut TELECOM's key projects.
The basic issue concerns the complex handling of resources and services in a large-scale and dynamic widely distributed environment. Handling operations concern research, classification, indexing, re-use, composition, etc.
The dynamic aspect covers the arrival and departure of nodes along with the absence of any significant integration, materialized by a general diagram, for example.
For the time being, we are tackling this issue separately for resources (data described by meta-data) and services (programs described by interfaces).
To achieve this, two standard applications are used: le e-learning and sharing of pedagogical resources ( learning objects) along with virtual companies (dynamic interconnection of the information systems of two companies described by sets of services and workflow).
To fulfill these objectives, the general idea is to add semantic information to the resources and services and to use these semantics in all handling processes.
These semantics will be described with reference to a field ontology.
The ultimate objective of the project is to try and identify common elements in resources and services in order to be able to construct a more generic environment.
Research
The project consists of three component parts: pedagogical resources, virtual companies and semantic pair-to-pair networks.
